Abstract

This article presents a methodology for calculating the Preventive Estimate for Credit Risk using a Transition Matrix based on Markov chains. Using historical data, a matrix is constructed that reflects the probabilities of migration between different levels of credit rating. These probabilities allow for a more accurate estimation of expected loss, aligned with the actual behavior of the loan portfolio. The proposed approach offers an alternative to the traditional methods used by financial institutions. The model’s applicability is demonstrated through a case study using real data from a Savings and Loan Cooperative, highlighting its usefulness in contexts characterized by limited information or high credit volatility. The model stands out for its ability to enhance credit risk management and optimize the establishment of preventive reserves, thereby contributing to greater financial strength.
