Nearshoring is presented as an opportunity for Mexico, having as a challenge the measurement of it. The objective is to generate the Nearshoring Impact Index (NSII), based on analyzing U.S. imports of the three main tariff chapters, from Mexico and China. Time series are analyzed; the Gauss determinant method was applied to measure the value of the trade area made up of the sales made by Mexico, in monthly periods of time, with respect to what was sold by China in those same periods of time. These values are the data to construct the NSII. The results show a strong advantage for Mexico, as of February 2023; therefore, it is concluded that there is empirical evidence of nearshoring in Mexico. This measurement focuses on the ultimate goal of nearshoring: to supply an international market of geographical proximity.
